Edward Rokosz and His Sculpture
The works of Edward Rokosz presented in this exhibition—a modest selection of the artist’s total sculptures, paintings, and drawings—represent a significant direction and focus for the artist. The use of items from nature and the respectful collaboration demonstrated with Rokosz’s communication with nature’s original design offers us, the viewer, an opportunity to respect diversity and force in our natural world while appreciating the creative impulse and influence of a human hand. Refusing to speak directly about any one of his works, even to the point of leaving them without titles, Rokosz gives a nod of acknowledgement to the idea that much of his works demonstrate an exploration of freedom and escape. His powerful use of wood and hesitation to modify its naturalness demonstrates a playful theme within his process, a tension between the containment and release of ideas within a sculpture.
As a photographer for much of his work, one principle of sculpture and three-dimensional design keeps me endlessly occupied trying to identify or select representational images for his web pages. It is this: in the best sculptures, every angle provides an effective, altering perspective from the one before it. Walk around these pieces. Watch each become an endless number of ideas within a number of changing concepts. In each sculpture Rokosz create a play in our minds. At every angle his play with imagery provides us a kaleidoscope of drama and dilemma. The containment and release of ideas are yours to discover. Allow these works be the prisms for your illuminations. You will walk away with a step lighter than the one that brought you here. Enjoy.
